FORBES CENTRAL WEST LIVESTOCK EXCHANGE
Central West Livestock Exchange
Animal welfare is a critical priority at
the Central West Livestock Exchange
(CWLE). The CWLE currently holds the
prestigious ALMA Animal Welfare Award
and the only facility in NSW to sell pigs.
Council have partnered with Tocal
Agricultural College to deliver an Accredited Livestock
Carer training program to all Council staff employed at the
CWLE to ensure development of skills and knowledge in
best practice animal husbandry.
Further to external staff training Council has developed
and implemented a CWLE induction for all users to the
facility which aims to educate and promote responsibilities
for all users of the facility.
The facility is also the fi rst-ever to have a designated Dog
Run at a sale yards complex. This project arose from
a conversation with transport operators regarding the
issue of dogs being contained on trucks for an extended
period during sale days. The site has a designated run
for the dogs which includes a trough to swim in, trees
for shade and dog boxes. This has had a huge impact
on animal welfare especially during the summer months
when temperatures regularly exceeds 40 degrees.
All pens at the CWLE have water troughs for livestock
during sales. Retained stock yards are fi lled with sawdust
and l ucerne hay.
